The Assembly of God Church School, Darjeeling, was founded by Rev. Claude Barua, an ordained minister of the Assemblies of God, in 1985 with 17 students. He started the school in an outskirt of the Darjeeling town in a rented wooden house. The School remained there for eight years and was relocated to its present place in 1993. The acclaimed motto of many Assembly of God Church Schools in India –"Building a better India by building better boys and girls" - had become a guiding principle for Rev. Claude Barua. This school was birthed as a direct result of this vision that burnt irresistibly in his heart.
Rev. Claude Barua, in fact, had never intended to build a high school but an English medium primary level school, to cater to the growing educational need of children of the town, was his agenda. But soon he discovered that the need he had seen was just a tip of an iceberg. The parents thronged his office almost every day with pleas to upgrade the school up to a high school. Mrs. Indira Barua, his wife inspired him to take up this challenge and he girded his loins to upgrade the school to a high school. The Baruas decided to adopt the ICSE Syllabus and the school was affiliated to the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi, in 2004. The Assembly of God Church School, Darjeeling, was recognized as a major player in the field of education when its first batch comprised of five students came out with flying colours in their first-ever ICSE Examinations in 2006.
Now the further up-gradation has taken place in the academic life of the School. The School has been upgraded to ISC Level from 2021. The School has started Class XI of Humanities and the procedure to begin the Commerce stream of ISC is already underway and waiting for the Council’s nod. The discipline of Science at the ISC level will begin in 2023.
The founding father of the Assembly of God Church School, Darjeeling, had envisaged creating a better society that is made of boys and girls who are not only intellectually affluent but also have developed hearts of compassion and character. Rev. Claude Barua incessantly strove in building boys and girls, who would contribute their learning, talent, and expertise to the society where they live in. He never dreamt of a society with solitude cold-hearted literate individuals. The early members of this school believed that the children needed to be given strong hands that usher their intellectual and compassionate virtues, learned in the school, to society in a form of selfless service. And the school is a place where all this will take place under the guidance of visionary and dedicated faculty members. The Assembly of God Church School was not started for the sake of starting one more school in the town, but it has its genesis in the belief that school is the only institution that produces a useful human resource for the country, and adhering to this vision of Rev. Claude Barua, the present Management of the School, strives, tooth and nail, to produce best boys and girls for our fine country.
Our motto is मस्तकमॄ हृदय हस्त development of Head, Heart, and Hands. Intellectual head, heart with noble character, and hands ready for service.
